The Industrial Revolution in Britain (c. 1760–1840)
The Industrial Revolution in Britain (c. 1760–1840) was the most profound economic-social transformation since the Neolithic agricultural revolution. Within four generations, an agrarian, handicraft-based island became the workshop of the world, dragging the rest of the planet into the era of factories, fossil fuels and self-sustaining growth.
The set of interconnected technological, economic and social changes — mechanised manufacturing, factory production, fossil-fuelled steam power, and urbanisation — that began in Britain around 1760 and spread to continental Europe, North America and Japan in the following century.
Why Britain?
Historians point to a unique combination of factors:
- Agricultural revolution (c. 1700–1800) — Jethro Tull's seed drill (1701), Lord Townshend's four-field crop rotation, Robert Bakewell's selective breeding, and enclosure of the open fields (peaking 1750–1830) raised yields and freed labour.
- Capital and credit — the Bank of England (1694), joint-stock companies and overseas trade profits.
- Coal and iron — abundant indigenous reserves close together in the Midlands, South Wales and the North-East.
- Political stability since 1688 and the legal protection of property.
- Imperial markets for finished goods and cheap raw materials, especially cotton from India and the American South.
- Scientific-mechanical culture — the Royal Society (1660), the Lunar Society of Birmingham (1765), and a tradition of empirical tinkering.

British cotton output rose roughly fifty-fold between 1780 and 1840, with Manchester ("Cottonopolis") at its centre.
Steam, iron and rail
The defining technology was the steam engine. Thomas Newcomen's atmospheric engine (1712) drained mines; James Watt's separate condenser (patented 1769) quadrupled efficiency. With Matthew Boulton's capital, Watt's engine reached factories and, after the rotary-motion patent of 1781, drove all manner of mechanical work.
In iron-making, Abraham Darby of Coalbrookdale pioneered coke smelting (1709); his grandson built the world's first iron bridge over the Severn (1779). Henry Cort's puddling and rolling process (1784) made wrought iron cheap. By 1850 Britain produced over half the world's pig iron.
The Railway Age
The Stockton and Darlington Railway (1825), built by George Stephenson, was the first public steam railway. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway (1830) — opened amid the famous death of MP William Huskisson under Stephenson's Rocket — proved the commercial case. By 1850 Britain had 10,000 km of railway; the Crystal Palace Great Exhibition of 1851 showcased British industrial primacy to six million visitors.

Social consequences
The new industrial order produced extraordinary wealth and savage inequality. Urbanisation was explosive: between 1801 and 1851 Manchester grew from 75,000 to 303,000; Glasgow from 77,000 to 329,000. London topped two million by 1841 — the first city of that scale since ancient Rome.
Working conditions and reform
- Combination Acts (1799, 1800) banned trade unions; repealed 1824–25.
- Peterloo Massacre (16 August 1819) — yeomanry cavalry killed 18 demonstrators at St Peter's Field, Manchester.
- Factory Act 1833 — banned children under 9 in textile mills, restricted older children's hours, established the first factory inspectorate.
- Slavery Abolition Act 1833 — outlawed slavery throughout the British Empire.
- Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 — workhouse-based relief, the harsh "Speenhamland" replacement.
- Mines Act 1842 — banned underground work for women and children under 10.
- Ten Hours Act 1847 — limited women and children's textile work to ten hours.
Political reform
The unreformed franchise gave rotten boroughs disproportionate representation. The Great Reform Act 1832 (passed under Earl Grey's Whig government after riots) abolished 56 rotten boroughs and extended the vote to about one in seven adult males. The frustrated Chartists demanded universal male suffrage, the secret ballot and annual parliaments through their People's Charter (1838).
The Anti-Corn Law League of Richard Cobden and John Bright campaigned against the Corn Laws of 1815, which kept grain prices high. Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel repealed the Corn Laws in 1846 after the Irish Potato Famine (1845–49) made protection politically indefensible — splitting the Conservative Party for a generation.
Intellectual and cultural responses
The Industrial Revolution generated its own ideologies:
- Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776) founded classical economics.
- Thomas Malthus's Essay on Population (1798) warned that population growth would outrun food supply.
- Robert Owen's model factory at New Lanark (1800–1825) prefigured early socialism.
- Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Capital (vol. 1, 1867) in industrial-revolutionary London and Manchester.
- The Romantic poets — Wordsworth, Blake ("dark Satanic mills"), Shelley — reacted against urban industrial ugliness.

Legacy
By 1851, with under 2% of the world's population, Britain produced about 40% of the world's manufactures and held nearly half its merchant shipping. The Revolution doubled per-capita income in three generations and changed the human relationship with energy and matter permanently. Its costs — environmental, demographic, colonial — became the agenda of the next century's politics.
