The Holy Quran

Islamic Studies · 5 MCQs. Surah names, ayah counts, revelation, compilation. 2025 alone tested 8 Quran-only questions.

Surah Identification: Names & Properties

FPSC treats the Quran chapter as a pure facts test — no theology, no interpretation. The question is never 'what does this Surah mean?' but always 'which Surah has this specific property?'

Trend alert: The 2025 paper tested 8 Quran-only questions. FPSC shifted from one or two factual Qs to deep Surah-specific testing. Expect this pattern to continue.

1.2 Topic Foundation

FPSC treats the Quran chapter as a pure facts test. No interpretation. No theology. The examiner picks specific, verifiable details — Surah names, their properties, famous verses, and revelation facts — then designs four options that look almost identical.

The question is never "what does this Surah mean?" The question is always "which Surah has this specific property?"

The examiner targets three zones: Surah identification (longest, shortest, special titles); Quran structure (total Surahs, Makki vs Madani, Huroof-e-Muqatta'at); and specific verses (what is in a particular Surah).

1.7 CSSPrep Memory Anchors

The Heart–Beauty–Bride Pattern

Three Surahs carry poetic titles. Heart of the Quran = Surah Yaseen. Beauty of the Quran = Surah Ar-Rahman. Bride of the Quran = also Surah Ar-Rahman. Yaseen = Heart. Rahman = Beauty and Bride.

The "Without" Rule

One Surah has no Bismillah at the start — Surah At-Tawbah. One Surah has Bismillah twice — Surah An-Naml. Tawbah (repentance) needs no opening blessing. Naml (ants) found it twice.

The 4–29–86–28 Number Chain

Muhammad appears 4 times. Huroof-e-Muqatta'at Surahs = 29. Makki Surahs = 86. Madani Surahs = 28. The chain: 4 → 29 → 86 + 28 = 114 total Surahs.

The Fatiha = First + Every Rule

Surah Al-Fatiha is the first Surah. It is recited in every rak'ah. It is called Umm-ul-Kitab (Mother of the Book). Three first-facts in one Surah.

The Abu Bakr → Usman Compilation Chain

Proposed = Hazrat Umar. Ordered = Hazrat Abu Bakr. Wrote = Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit. Held the copy = Hazrat Hafsah. Standardised and distributed = Hazrat Usman. Each person had one role.

1.8 FPSC Trap Alert

The TrapCorrect AnswerWhy Students Pick the Wrong One
Heart of Quran = Surah Ar-Rahman?Surah YaseenRahman is popular and sounds grand. It is actually "Beauty" and "Bride."
Shortest Surah = Surah Al-Fatiha?Surah Al-Kausar (3 verses)Al-Fatiha is short and always first. Al-Kausar has only 3 verses.
Quran compiled by Hazrat Usman?Compiled by Zaid bin Thabit under Abu BakrUsman standardised and distributed. Compilation was under Abu Bakr.
Prophet's name in Quran = 25 times?4 timesFPSC offers 4, 25, 33, 66 as options. Answer is 4.
Huroof-e-Muqatta'at in 25 Surahs?29 Surahs2025 paper offered 25, 29, and 31. Correct = 29.
Surah Al-Anfal = Children murder prohibition?Surah Al-An'amAl-Anfal covers war booty (Maal-e-Ghanimat). Al-An'am covers killing children.
Surah Al-Fath = where "Muhammad is Messenger" stated?Surah Al-Fath (48:29)The phrase is in Al-Fath. The name Muhammad appears in 4 Surahs.
First Hafiz = Hazrat Ali?Hazrat Usman (R.A)Ali is associated with knowledge. Usman was the first Hafiz.

1.9 Near-Miss Analysis

QuestionMost Chosen Wrong AnswerWhy It Feels Right (But Isn't)
Heart of the Quran?Surah Ar-RahmanRahman is called "Bride of the Quran." Both feel like emotional titles. Yaseen = Heart.
Longest Ayah?Ayat-ul-KursiAyat-ul-Kursi is the most famous verse. Famous ≠ longest. Longest = Ayat-e-Mudayanat (Al-Baqarah 2:282).
Surah without Bismillah?Surah Al-FatihaAl-Fatiha begins with Bismillah. Answer is Surah At-Tawbah.
Who compiled the Quran?Hazrat Usman (R.A)Usman distributed standardised copies. Abu Bakr ordered the first compilation.
Surah Hud "aged" the Prophet?Surah Al-BaqarahAl-Baqarah is longest. Hadith in Tirmidhi specifically names Surah Hud.

1.10 If You Forget — Elimination Guide

Scenario 1 — Heart of the Quran. Eliminate Al-Fatiha (Umm-ul-Kitab) and Al-Baqarah (longest). Between Yaseen and Rahman: Rahman = Beauty/Bride. Yaseen = Heart.

Scenario 2 — Who compiled the Quran. Eliminate Umar (proposed) and Usman (distributed). Between Abu Bakr and Zaid: Abu Bakr ordered. Zaid wrote out.

Scenario 3 — How many times Muhammad appears. Number is small — only 4 times. The name appears in Al-Imran, Al-Ahzab, Muhammad, and Al-Fath.

Scenario 4 — Makki vs Madani counts. Makkah came first → more Surahs = 86. Madina came second → fewer = 28. Total = 114.

Surah Al-Fatiha is recited in every rak'ah. What is another title of this Surah?

        Show explanation

Umm-ul-Kitab means Mother of the Book. Al-Fatiha carries this title.

        2025

Which Surah of the Quran starts without Bismillah?

          Show explanation

At-Tawbah is the only Surah with no opening Bismillah. An-Naml has Bismillah twice.

Trap: Students pick Al-Fatiha — it actually begins with Bismillah.

Which Surah contains the story of Ashaab-e-Kahf (People of the Cave)?

            Show explanation

Al-Kahf means 'The Cave.' The story of the Companions of the Cave is in this Surah.

              2025

              Tier 2 — Trap-Based

Muqatta'at count, compilation chain, Maal-e-Ghanimat, Hud, An'am, Makki count.

                Show explanation

Huroof-e-Muqatta'at are the abbreviated letters (Alif Laam Meem etc.) at the start of 29 Surahs.

Trap: 25 feels like a clean round number — it is wrong.

                2025

Who proposed the compilation of the Holy Quran into one book?

                  Show explanation

Umar proposed it. Abu Bakr ordered it. Zaid wrote it out. Usman later standardised and distributed copies.

Trap: Usman is famous for the Quran — but he distributed, not compiled.

                  2023

                      Show explanation

Hadith in Tirmidhi records the Prophet saying Surah Hud aged him due to its solemn warnings.

Trap: Al-Baqarah is the longest and feels the hardest.

                      2025

Al-An'am (verse 151) and Al-Isra (verse 31) both address this. Al-An'am was tested in 2025.

Trap: Al-Anfal was tested for war booty — students carry it over.

                        2025

The Quran has a total of how many Makki Surahs?

86 Surahs were revealed in Makkah. 28 in Madina. Total = 114.

Trap: 28 is the Madani count.

                          Tier 3 — Elite Simulation

Bismillah twice, Rabbi Zidni Ilma, compilation chain, Muhammad phrase, revelation sequence.

Which Surah appears twice with Bismillah in the Holy Quran?

                            Show explanation

An-Naml opens with Bismillah and contains a second Bismillah within verse 30 (from Sulaiman's letter). At-Tawbah has none.

Trap: At-Tawbah comes to mind because it is the Bismillah-less Surah.

The Prophet (PBUH) said 'Rabbi Zidni Ilma' is a Quranic verse. In which Surah does it appear?

                              Show explanation

'Rabbi Zidni Ilma' (O Lord, increase me in knowledge) appears in Surah Ta-Ha, verse 114.

Trap: Al-Baqarah contains many du'as — students guess it.

                              2022

Which of these statements about the Quran's compilation chain is correct?

                                Show explanation

Abu Bakr ordered. Zaid bin Thabit wrote it out. Hafsah held the original. Usman later standardised copies for distribution.

Trap: Option A reverses Usman and Zaid — very common error.

FPSC asked: 'The phrase — Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah — is stated in which Surah?' What is the correct answer?

                                  Show explanation

Surah Al-Fath (48:29) contains the phrase 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' The name Muhammad also appears in Al-Imran, Al-Ahzab, and Surah Muhammad — but the specific phrase tested points to Al-Fath.

Trap: Muhammad's name appears in Al-Imran and Al-Ahzab too — but not this phrase.

                                  2023

Which is the correct sequence for the revelation of the Quran?

                                    Show explanation

The Makki period came first (before Hijra), lasted approx. 12 years 9 months. Madani period lasted approx. 9 years 9 months. Total: 22 years 5 months.

Trap: Option D reverses the years — Makki period was longer, not shorter.
