4.1 Context
Section A | Islamic Studies | 4 Marks | 4 MCQs | Past Paper Frequency: MEDIUM (tested in 3 of 4 papers).
This is the smallest Islamic Studies chapter — 4 marks. FPSC draws from three distinct areas: Fiqh terminology, Zakat specifics, and Prophet titles. One question from each area is the realistic expectation per paper.
High-Yield Snapshot
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| MPT marks | 4 |
| MCQ target | 4 |
| Difficulty | Low |
| Past paper frequency | Medium — 3 of 4 papers |
Past Paper Concentration
| Year | Focus |
|---|---|
| 2022 | 2 Qs — Fiqhi schools, Tafseer title |
| 2023 | 2 Qs — Prophet titles, Zakat heads |
| 2024 | 0 direct Qs |
| 2025 | 4 Qs — Fiqh terms, Zakat, Prophets, Inheritance law |
Examiner pattern: Each question gives four options that all sound like valid Islamic terms. The answer is usually the most precise technical term — not the broadest. Knowing the exact Arabic term beats knowing the general category.
4.2 The Four Schools of Islamic Jurisprudence
These four schools represent the major traditions of Sunni Islamic legal reasoning. FPSC tested their category name in 2022 — the answer was "Fiqhi doctrines," not creed-based or Kalamic.
| School | Founding Imam | Primary Region | Key Characteristic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A) | South Asia, Turkey, Central Asia | Most followed in Pakistan — heaviest use of Qiyas (analogy) |
| Maliki | Imam Malik bin Anas (R.A) | North & West Africa | Highest reliance on practice of Madinans (Amal Ahl al-Madina) |
| Shafi'i | Imam Muhammad al-Shafi'i (R.A) | Egypt, East Africa, Southeast Asia | Systematised Usul al-Fiqh (legal theory) — wrote Al-Risala |
| Hanbali | Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (R.A) | Saudi Arabia, Gulf States | Most conservative — strictest adherence to Quran and Sunnah |
4.3 Islamic Legal Terminology (Fiqh Terms)
FPSC tested Ijma sub-types in 2025 and the Law of Inheritance term in 2025. These are the precise technical terms the examiner now reaches for.
| Term | Category | Meaning + FPSC Application |
|---|---|---|
| Ijma | Sources of Fiqh | Scholarly consensus — third source of Islamic law after Quran and Sunnah |
| Ijma Sukuti | Type of Ijma | Silent consensus — scholars of one community tacitly accept another community's ruling. TESTED 2025. |
| Ijma Qolli | Type of Ijma | Verbal consensus — scholars explicitly state their agreement in words |
| Ijma Faili | Type of Ijma | Consensus by action — scholars agree through common practice |
| Ijma Taqriri | Type of Ijma | Approval consensus — scholars approve a ruling by not objecting to it |
| Qiyas | Sources of Fiqh | Analogical reasoning — applying existing ruling to new case by analogy |
| Ijtihad | Sources of Fiqh | Independent legal reasoning by a qualified scholar on new issues |
| Ilm ul Faraiz | Branch of Fiqh | Law of Inheritance — TESTED 2025. Also called Ilm al-Mawaris. |
| Ilm ul Fiqh | General | Broad term for Islamic jurisprudence — NOT the inheritance law term |
| Ilm ul Arooz | Unrelated | Science of Arabic poetic metres — used as distractor |
| Wajib | Legal category | Obligatory — one level below Farz. Omitting it is sinful but less severe. |
| Farz | Legal category | Strictly obligatory — established by definitive Quranic text or Hadith |
| Mustahab | Legal category | Recommended — rewarded if done, not punished if omitted |
| Makruh | Legal category | Disliked — better to avoid but not sinful |
| Haram | Legal category | Prohibited — doing it is a sin |
| Halal | Legal category | Permitted — no restriction |
4.4 Five Pillars of Islam: FPSC-Tested Facts
FPSC does not ask "what are the five pillars?" — every student knows that. The examiner tests specific numerical and legal details attached to each pillar.
| # | Pillar (Arabic) | FPSC-Tested Specific Facts |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Shahada (Tauheed) | Its opposite = Shirk. Shirk is the only unpardonable sin in the Quran. |
| 2nd | Salah (Namaz) | Declared compulsory in 10th Nabvi during Mi'raj. 5 compulsory: Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. Surah Al-Fatiha in every rak'ah. |
| 3rd | Sawm (Fasting) | Declared "armour of Islam." Ramzan fasting — 29 or 30 days. Laylat-ul-Qadr in last 10 nights — better than 1,000 months. |
| 4th | Zakat | Compulsory in 2nd Hijri. Mentioned 32 times in Quran. Spent on 8 categories (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60) — TESTED 2023. Nisab: Gold = 7.5 tolas / Silver = 52.5 tolas / Camels = 5 / Goats = 40. |
| 5th | Hajj | Compulsory in 9th Hijri. Prophet performed ONE Hajj (10th Hijri). Arafat on 9th Zulhajj = Farz. Stoning (Ramee) on 10th Zulhajj at Jumerat. |
4.5 Zakat: The Numbers FPSC Tests

| Backbone of Islam | Zakat | "Backbone" (reedh) of Islam — specific Hadith reference |
4.6 Other Prophets: Titles & Key Facts

4.9 CSSPrep Memory Anchors
The Ibrahim Double — Khalilullah AND Ab-ul-Anbiya
Hazrat Ibrahim carries two major titles. FPSC tested Khalilullah in 2025. The anchor: Ibrahim is the only prophet whose lineage produced two separate prophetic traditions — Ismail (Arabs) and Ishaq (Jews and Christians). Father of all three faiths = Ab-ul-Anbiya.
The Nooh Double — Adam-e-Sani AND Shaikh-ul-Anbiya
Adam-e-Sani means Second Adam — after the flood, humanity descended only from his family. Shaikh-ul-Anbiya means Elder of Prophets — he lived 950 years. If a question asks for a "second" or "elder" title — Nooh.
The Ijma Sukuti Fix — Silent = Absent Agreement
Sukuti means silent. Ijma Sukuti is when scholars of one community do not object to another community's ruling — their silence is taken as consent. FPSC tested this in 2025. Sukuti = silence = tacit agreement.
The Zakat 8 — One Verse, Eight Categories
Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) lists exactly 8 categories for Zakat distribution: the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing slaves, those in debt, those in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller. FPSC offered 7, 8, and 9 as options in 2023. The answer is always 8.
The Ilm ul Faraiz Trap — Fiqh ≠ Inheritance
Ilm ul Fiqh is the broad term for all Islamic jurisprudence. Ilm ul Faraiz is specifically the Law of Inheritance. FPSC used Ilm ul Fiqh and Ilm ul Arooz as wrong options in 2025. Ilm ul Arooz is about Arabic poetry metres. Faraiz = Fara'id = shares/portions = inheritance.
4.10 FPSC Trap Alert
| The Trap | Correct Answer | Why Students Get It Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali = creed-based doctrines? | Fiqhi doctrines | Creed-based sounds religious enough. But these schools deal with law (Fiqh), not theology (Aqeeda/Kalam). Tested 2022. |
| Zakat heads = 7? | 8 categories | 7 sounds right. Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 lists 8 specific groups. Tested 2023. |
| Khalilullah = Hazrat Musa? | Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) | Musa = Kalim-ullah. Ibrahim = Khalilullah. Both have powerful divine relationships — different titles. Tested 2025. |
| Khateeb-ul-Anbiya = Hazrat Dawood? | Hazrat Shoaib (A.S) | Dawood had a beautiful voice — oratory connection. But Shoaib was known for his powerful preaching to his trading nation. |
| Law of Inheritance = Ilm ul Fiqh? | Ilm ul Faraiz | Ilm ul Fiqh is the broad umbrella. Faraiz is the precise inheritance term. Tested 2025. |
| Ijma Sukuti = scholars verbally agree? | No — silent/tacit agreement | Sukuti means silent. Qolli is the verbal type. Tested 2025. |
| Obligatory charity = Sadaqah? | Zakat | Sadaqah is voluntary. Zakat is the mandatory annual charity with Nisab thresholds. Khums is a one-fifth tax on mine wealth. |
| Adam-e-Sani = Hazrat Ibrahim? | Hazrat Nooh (A.S) | Ibrahim is Ab-ul-Anbiya. Adam-e-Sani belongs to Nooh — humanity restarted through his family after the flood. |
4.11 Near-Miss Analysis
| Question | Most Chosen Wrong Answer | Why It Feels Right (But Isn't) |
|---|---|---|
| How many Zakat heads? | 7 | Seven is a sacred number in Islamic context. The Quran specifies 8. |
| Khalilullah = which Prophet? | Hazrat Musa (A.S) | Musa had direct conversation with Allah — seems like the "closest friend." But Musa = Kalim-ullah. Ibrahim = Khalilullah. |
| Law of Inheritance term? | Ilm ul Fiqh | Fiqh is the whole field. Faraiz is the specific branch for inheritance distribution. |
| Ijma Sukuti definition? | Verbal agreement by scholars | Sukuti means the silence was the agreement. The absence of objection = consent. |
4.12 If You Forget — Elimination Guide
Scenario 1 — Which prophet is Khalilullah. Options: Musa, Ibrahim, Isa, None. Eliminate Isa (Rooh-ullah). Eliminate Musa (Kalim-ullah). The Quran (4:125) explicitly calls Ibrahim Khalilullah.
Scenario 2 — How many Zakat categories. Anchor: Surah At-Tawbah 9:60. One verse, numbered list: poor, needy, Zakat collectors, those won over, freeing slaves, debtors, Allah's cause, stranded travellers = 8.
Scenario 3 — Fiqh school classification. Eliminate creed-based (Aqeeda), Kalamic (philosophy), theological (too broad). Fiqhi doctrines = schools of Islamic law.
Scenario 4 — Ijma types. Sukuti (samt/silence) = silent. Qolli (qaul/speech) = verbal. Faili (fi'l/action) = by action. The Arabic root word tells you the type.
4.13 5-Minute Battle Card
- Fiqh Schools: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali = Fiqhi doctrines (NOT creed-based) — tested 2022
- Ijma Sukuti = silent consensus | Ijma Qolli = verbal | Ilm ul Faraiz = Law of Inheritance (NOT Ilm ul Fiqh) — tested 2025
- Zakat: obligatory charity (NOT Sadaqah/Khums) | 8 categories — Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 (tested 2023) | Compulsory from 2nd Hijri | 32 mentions in Quran
- Nisab: Gold = 7.5 tolas | Silver = 52.5 tolas | Camels = 5 | Goats = 40 | Mine wealth = Khumus (1/5)

- Angels: Jibrael = revelation | Mikael = rain & food | Izraeel = takes souls | Israfil = blows Soor | Munkar & Nakeer = question dead | Kiraman Katibeen = record deeds
- Laylat-ul-Qadr = last 10 nights of Ramzan = better than 1,000 months
4.14 Practice MCQs
Tier 1 — Basic Recall
Schools, titles, Zakat heads, charity terms.
What are Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali?
Show explanation
These four are the major schools of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh). They deal with law — not creed (Aqeeda) or theology (Kalam).
Trap: Creed-based sounds religious — students confuse law with belief.
2022
Which Prophet is known as Khalilullah (Friend of Allah)?
Show explanation
The Quran (4:125) gives Ibrahim the title Khalilullah. Musa = Kalim-ullah. Isa = Rooh-ullah. Dawood = Najeeb-ullah.
Trap: Musa had direct conversation with Allah — feels closest to 'Friend.'
2025
According to the Quran, Zakat can be distributed among how many categories of recipients?
Show explanation
Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) specifies exactly 8 categories. This is a fixed Quranic number.
Trap: 7 is a common Islamic sacred number — students default to it.
2023
Which Prophet has the title 'Khateeb-ul-Anbiya' (Orator of the Prophets)?
Show explanation
Shoaib was called the Orator of Prophets because of his powerful preaching to his trading nation. His people committed commercial fraud.
Trap: Dawood had a beautiful voice — oratory association misleads students.
2023
What is the term for obligatory charity in Islam?
Show explanation
Zakat is the mandatory annual charity — one of the Five Pillars. Sadaqah is voluntary. Khums is a one-fifth tax on mine wealth. Infaq means general spending in Allah's way.
Trap: Sadaqah is the most commonly used charity word.
2025
Tier 2 — Trap-Based
Inheritance term, Ijma types, second Adam, Zakat year.
In the books of Islamic Jurisprudence, the Law of Inheritance is specifically called:
Show explanation
Ilm ul Fiqh = all Islamic law. Ilm ul Faraiz = specifically inheritance/shares. Ilm ul Arooz = Arabic poetry metres. Ilm ul Kalam = Islamic theology.
Trap: Fiqh covers law — students assign the specific branch to the general term.
2025
The consensus of a community adopted silently by scholars of another community is called:
Show explanation
Sukuti = from silence. When scholars do not object to another community's ruling, their silence constitutes consent. Qolli = verbal. Faili = by action.
Trap: Ijma sounds like active agreement — students pick Qolli (verbal).
2025
Which Prophet is described as 'Adam-e-Sani' (Second Adam)?
Show explanation
After the Great Flood, humanity was repopulated through Nooh's family — hence Second Adam. Ibrahim is Ab-ul-Anbiya. Idrees was the first writer.
Trap: Ibrahim feels like a 'second founder' — students assign Adam-e-Sani to him.
Zakat was made compulsory in the Islamic calendar in:
Show explanation
Zakat became obligatory in 2 AH — the same year as Battle of Badr and the change of Qibla. Hajj became compulsory in 9 AH.
Trap: Hajj = 9 AH is well known — students carry that year to Zakat.
Which Prophet is known as Kalim-ullah (One who spoke directly to Allah)?
Show explanation
Allah spoke to Musa directly on Mount Tur (Sinai) — hence Kalim-ullah. Ibrahim = Khalilullah. Isa = Rooh-ullah.
Trap: Ibrahim's friendship title feels more personal than Musa's speaking title.
The minimum Nisab for Zakat on goats and sheep is:
Show explanation
Nisab for goats/sheep = 40. Fewer than 40 means no Zakat is due. For camels it is 5. For gold it is 7.5 tolas.
Trap: 20 or 30 feels proportional — students guess a smaller number.
Tier 3 — Elite Simulation
Multi-pair correctness, INCORRECT spotting, school dominance.
Which of these correctly pairs a prophet with his title?
Show explanation
Option B correctly pairs both. Khalilullah = Ibrahim (not Musa). Najeeb-ullah = Dawood (not Ibrahim). Ab-ul-Anbiya = Ibrahim (not Nooh).
Trap: Option A swaps Musa and Isa. Option C gives Dawood's title to Ibrahim.
Three statements about Zakat are given. Which one is INCORRECT?
Show explanation
The Quran specifies exactly 8 categories in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) — not 9. Statements A, C, and D are all factually correct.
Trap: Students think 9 is reasonable given the variety of charity types listed.
FPSC asked in 2022: 'What are Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali?' The correct answer was Fiqhi doctrines. If FPSC now asks 'which of these is the school most common in Pakistan?' — the answer would be:
Show explanation
The Hanafi school is dominant in Pakistan, South Asia, Turkey, and Central Asia. Founded by Imam Abu Hanifa, it relies heavily on Qiyas (analogical reasoning).
Trap: Hanbali is associated with Saudi Arabia — some students confuse Gulf prominence with Pakistan.
