15.1 Context
In the CSS MCQ-Based Preliminary Test (MPT), Narration functions as a Reporting Logic Recalibration System. The examiner does not test decorative rewriting. The task is structural: when speech shifts from direct to indirect form, the grammatical frame must adjust without disturbing chronology, identity, or spatial reference.
Narration therefore measures whether a candidate can transfer a statement from one perspective to another while preserving logical integrity. Errors occur not because rules are unknown, but because multiple adjustments must occur simultaneously.
15.2 The Unified Reporting Recalibration Model
When Direct Speech converts into Indirect Speech, three structural recalibrations occur together. They are not independent rules; they are coordinated perspective shifts.
- Temporal Recalibration (Tense Logic)
- Identity Realignment (Pronoun Logic)
- Situational Relocation (Time & Place Markers)
These three changes operate as a single control system. If one shifts and the others do not, structural imbalance results.
Narration is not about "changing tense." It is about repositioning the entire statement inside the reporter's timeline and perspective.
15.2.1 Temporal Recalibration (Backshift Logic)
Backshift applies only when the reporting verb is in the past. If the reporting verb is present or future, tense remains unchanged.
Backshift Architecture
| Direct Tense | Indirect Tense | Structural Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Present Simple | Past Simple | Current action becomes past relative to reporting moment |
| Present Continuous | Past Continuous | Ongoing action moves one layer back |
| Present Perfect | Past Perfect | Completed action shifts further back |
| Past Simple | Past Perfect | Chronology preserved through deeper past |
| Past Perfect | No Change | Already at furthest temporal depth |
| Will | Would | Modal shifts backward |
| Can | Could | Modal shifts backward |
Critical Control Points
- Past Perfect does not shift further. Any attempt to backshift it again creates a structural impossibility.
- Universal truths do not shift. Back-shifting a scientific fact implies it is no longer true.
- Direct: The teacher said, "The earth revolves around the sun."
- Indirect: The teacher said that the earth revolves around the sun.
Over-backshift trap: "The earth revolved" falsely suggests temporal change.
15.2.2 Identity Realignment (Pronoun Logic)
Pronouns must recalibrate to match reporting perspective. This is not random substitution. It is identity mapping.
Structural Alignment Rules
- First person collapses into the speaker's identity.
- Second person aligns with the listener.
- Third person generally remains stable.
- Direct: Ali said, "I will complete my work."
- Indirect: Ali said that he would complete his work.
"I" becomes "he." "My" becomes "his." Pronoun misalignment creates ambiguity and signals structural weakness.
Examiner Trap: Candidates often change tense correctly but forget to realign pronouns. This produces grammatically acceptable but logically distorted sentences.
15.2.3 Situational Relocation (Time & Place Markers)
Direct speech is anchored in the speaker's immediate context. Indirect speech must relocate that context to the reporter's frame.
Situational Shift Grid
| Direct | Indirect |
|---|---|
| now | then |
| today | that day |
| yesterday | the previous day |
| tomorrow | the next day |
| here | there |
| this | that |
| these | those |
- Direct: She said, "I met him yesterday."
- Indirect: She said that she had met him the previous day.
If tense shifts but "yesterday" remains unchanged, the sentence contains chronological inconsistency.
15.3 Reporting Verb Precision
Reporting verbs must reflect the function of the original speech.
| Function | Reporting Verb | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Statement | said / told | said that… / told + object + that… |
| Question | asked / inquired | asked + object + WH/if |
| Command | ordered / told | ordered + object + to + V1 |
| Advice | advised | advised + object + to + V1 |
Critical Structural Rules
- "Said" cannot take a direct object without "to."
- Incorrect: He said me to wait.
- Correct: He told me to wait.
- "Told" must take an object.
"Said me" is one of the most common elimination triggers in MPT.
15.4 Indirect Question Control
Direct questions use inversion. Indirect questions revert to statement order.
- Direct: He said, "Where are you going?"
- Incorrect Indirect: He asked where was I going.
- Correct Indirect: He asked where I was going.
Rules
- Subject must precede verb.
- "That" cannot precede WH-words.
- If question is Yes/No, use if or whether.
Examiner Trap: Retention of question inversion is one of the most frequent structural failures.
15.5 Examiner Psychology & High-Risk Zones
The FPSC targets predictable failure patterns.
| Trap | Structural Distortion |
|---|---|
| Over-Backshift | Shifting universal truths unnecessarily |
| Double Backshift | Attempting to shift Past Perfect again |
| Inversion Retention | Keeping question word order |
| "Said Me" Error | Using said with direct object |
| Partial Recalibration | Changing tense but not pronoun or time marker |
Narration questions are designed to test simultaneous control. The examiner often embeds multiple recalibrations inside a single sentence.
15.6 Applied Structural Analysis
Q: She said, "I have completed the work today."
Required recalibration:
- Present Perfect → Past Perfect
- "I" → "she"
- "Today" → "that day"
Correct: She said that she had completed the work that day.
Failure to adjust any one of the three elements collapses structural coherence.
15.7 Integrated Control Checklist
Before selecting an answer, audit the entire reporting system:
- Has the reporting verb triggered backshift?
- Has the tense shifted correctly (and only when required)?
- Are pronouns aligned with speaker and listener identity?
- Have time/place markers relocated to reporting frame?
- Has question inversion been removed?
- Is the reporting verb structurally compatible ("told" vs "said")?
Narration in the CSS MPT does not test memory of rules. It tests whether a candidate can execute coordinated recalibration of time, identity, and situation without destabilizing the sentence.
When these three adjustments operate together, reporting becomes mechanical. When one fails, the entire structure fractures.

Part IV — Consolidation & Exam Simulation
Part III strengthened your structural foundation. You studied grammar not as isolated rules, but as a support system for correction, precision, and control. Articles, prepositions, agreement, tenses, pronouns, voice, and narration now function as tools rather than topics.
Part IV moves from structure to performance. Here, the focus shifts from understanding rules to applying them under exam pressure. This section consolidates patterns, simulates real MPT conditions, and tests whether your structural discipline holds when speed and complexity increase.
Grammar knowledge built competence. Consolidation will test command.
